Phoenix is Your City

A Resource for Teaching Phoenix City Government

Introduction

Local government provides an opportunity to learn about democracy and citizenship in a way that relates directly to students' lives. Phoenix is Your City is designed as an introduction to the basic concepts of local government for sixth, seventh and eighth grade students. The guide can be adapted for younger or older students, or used in part to explain specific concepts only.

More importantly, Phoenix is Your City is also an invitation to create lessons and projects that relate directly to students' lives by focusing on the city in which they live. The city of Phoenix reflects the people who live here. City government exists because the citizens created it, and it is responsive to its citizens because they are involved.

The city of Phoenix provides a wealth of opportunities for experiential learning. Students' understanding of local government can be increased with some of the suggested activities, or the study of the city of Phoenix can be expanded in your classroom using city publications or resources.

Phoenix is Your City was developed for teachers by the Phoenix Youth and Education Programs Office. This office staffs the Youth and Education Commission, oversees know99 Television and acts as a liaison for the city with public schools in Phoenix. We look forward to hearing your comments about Phoenix is Your City.
