Adopt-A-Family
October to December

Looking for a way to share your holiday spirit?
The holiday season is a time of stress and anxiety for low-income families when their budget already is stretched to pay bills. Buying gifts and decorations are a luxury few can afford.

The city of Phoenix is asking individuals and groups to "adopt" a family for the holiday season. "Adopting" means that you are matched with a family to provide items such as:
* A gift for each child in the family
* A gift for each parent in the family
* Other basic needs for the household such as towels, sheets, etc. (These items can be new or like-new.)

Cash or check donations also are welcomed and we will do the shopping for you.

Donations for adopted families are tax-deductible and acknowledgement is available.

How to "adopt" a family this holiday season:
1. Contact the Human Services Department by Nov. 7 to request information about a family.
Call 602-534-8196 or e-mail lisa.araujo@phoenix.gov
2. Provide your information for matching: desired family size, family's needs, geographical area, etc.
3. Purchase and deliver your holiday packages by Dec. 12.
4. Enjoy the joy of giving!

The families who benefit include parents involved in the Family Self-Sufficiency program (residents of public housing), family services centers, Head Start families and School-Based program (students in grades 4 to 12 and their parents).

The participants' common goal is to support their families without welfare and to become self-sufficient in the near future.

Last year, 344 families were assisted through the Adopt-A-Family Program.
