In 1980, the South Phoenix Youth Center (SPYC) was opened next to South Mountain High School. The Center was built in response to requests from teenagers saying they needed a safe place to hang out. The Center’s mission is to provide positive alternatives and promote self-development of youth. This mission is met by providing a variety of programs, special events, school activities, information, and by offering referrals to social service agencies, A majority of the activities that take place at SPYC are traditional recreation programs adapted for teen populations.
There are approximately 140 classes offered annually at the South Phoenix Youth Center. The classes range from ongoing groups to one-time special classes to teach a special skill. Classes are geared to be informative, engaging, and of relevance to teens. Some activities, events, and classes offered at the center include Ping-Pong, foosball, music, pool, video and table games, and the newly added fitness room. Special events include tournaments, dances, parties, talent shows, adventure trips, and sports leagues.
Another major component of South Phoenix Youth Center programming is groups. These are not only fun but also enhance self image and increase awareness, develop positive relationships and peer interaction. The groups provide positive alternative activities in a safe environment. This is done through weekly meetings and rehearsals. Each group has a staff person who assists in processing of group dynamics, problem solving, teamwork, and decision making. The youth, along with their instructors, are responsible for all facets of the group.
