The Public Works Department provides mechanical and electrical maintenance and energy conservation services for city facilities, and procures, manages and maintains the city's fleet of vehicular equipment. The department also provides for the collection and disposal of residential garbage and recyclables.

Energy Management, Recycling activities honored at environmental excellence event
On Sept. 6 Public Works received the Crescordia Award, Valley Forward Association's top honor. The Special Events Recycling Unit as well as the Recycling in the Mountain Preserves programs were also honored with an Award of Merit in the Environmental Education/Communication Public Sector category. The awards were presented to department staff at the 28th Annual Environmental Excellence Awards Dinner to recognize outstanding contributions to the physical environment in Valley communities. Public Works received the Crescordia award for Environmental Technologies in the Public Sector category for Energy Management's work on the Rio Salado habitat solar irrigation enhancement. The award was accepted by John Trujillo, Acting Director; Carolyn Bristo, Assistant Director; and Dimitrios Laloudakis, Energy Manager. Larry Schone, energy management engineer, is pictured holding the Crescordia Award. Councilmen promote reusable bags at Ranch Market
On Sept. 6 city councilmen Michael Nowakowski and Greg Stanton participated in the the giveaway of reusable shopping bags at the Ranch Market at Central and Southern avenues. Nearly 400 patrons at the store received cloth bags and recycling literature from the councilmen and recycling staff. Also participating were Trish Hart from the Arizona Food Marketing Alliance and Jeff Lewis from the corporate offices of Phoenix Ranch Markets. A reporter from Spanish-language newspaper Prensa Hispana interviewed the councilmen for a story that appeared Sept. 10.
Mayor annouces LEED 'Gold' for Glenrosa Service Center
Television channels 3, 5 and 11 provided video coverage of Mayor Phil Gordon's news conference on Aug. 11 to announce the city's first "gold" building designation by the U.S. Green Building Council - the Glenrosa Service Center, which houses multiple city departments. The LEED Certification system is a nationally-accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance resource-conserving buildings. KFYI Radio and Prensa Hispania were also present to report the event.
