Youthbuild Phoenix

The YouthBuild Phoenix Program is a community development program that addresses several core issues facing low-income communities: housing, education, employment, crime prevention and leadership development.

YouthBuild Phoenix provides disadvantaged youth with the unique opportunity to learn educational and employment skills necessary for economic success, while increasing the supply of permanent affordable housing for homeless individuals and low-income families.

The participants receive education and training in high-demand occupations, meaningful work and service opportunities in their community, opportunities to develop employment and leadership skills and post-secondary education and training opportunities.

The three- to eight-month program offers a stipend up to $337.50 every two weeks while in training, plus additional performance incentives. Assistance with job placement, continuing education and apprenticeship training are part of the program.

Now in its 11th year, the city of Phoenix YouthBuild Program is seeking qualified applicants for its full-time occupational and educational training program.

Eligible participants must be:

• a Phoenix resident,
  
• between the ages of 17 and 24,
  
• dropped out of school or with a diploma/GED but basic skills deficient,
  
• a member of one or more of the following groups:
  • low-income family,
    
  • youth in foster care (including youth aging out of foster care),
    
  • youth offender,
    
  • youth who is an individual with a disability,
    
  • youth who has been referred by a local secondary school or for participation in a YouthBuild program leading to the attainment of a secondary school diploma

The program is sponsored by the City of Phoenix Human Services Department in partnership with:

• Arizona Call-A-Teen Youth Resources, Inc.,
• Labor's Community Service Agency,
• City of Phoenix Community and Economic Development Department Workforce Connection Division and
• Goodwill of Central Arizona.

YouthBuild Phoenix received $1.1 million (74 percent of total cost) from a grant awarded under the YouthBuild grants, as implemented by the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration.
