Educating Kids on Crystal Methamphetamine Dangers
When we formed Phoenix's community Crystal Meth Task Force last summer, we knew that coming up with solutions would be a multi-faceted, multi-year effort. The Task Force started by recommending an ordinance to regulate the sale of key raw ingredients to make crystal meth. Now, 38 towns and cities around Arizona have passed similar ordinances.
Our next focus is on children - teaching that trying crystal meth even once can destroy their lives. The city is working now to produce educational videos for children, with stories from young people whose lives have been scarred by crystal meth. Scientific focus groups will help guide the messages included in the videos. Thanks to the generosity of the Arizona Credit Union System, when completed, this video will be available to schools all around the state. The United Phoenix Fire Fighters Association and the Phoenix Police and Fire departments are also helping fund this important effort.
One step at a time, our community can fight back against the crystal meth epidemic that has caused so much pain for so many.
Councilman Dave Siebert chairs the City Council Public Safety Subcommittee and represents District 1. Councilman Tom Simplot represents District 4. They chair the city's Crystal Meth Task Force.
