Find Summer Fun in Phoenix
With the dog days of summer here, there are plenty of warm-weather ways to enjoy Phoenix. Our city really is the place for “fun in the sun,” and we have plenty of opportunities for culture and education. There are numerous city-sponsored indoor activities as well, if shade is more your speed. Just a few things to put on the calendar:
Our next Moonlight Movie will be perfect for the whole family. The comic adventure “The Sandlot” plays at Steele Indian School Park on June 24, starting at sunset. It’s the story of a group of friends who start a sandlot baseball team and end up losing their prize ball in the mysterious neighbor’s yard. For anyone who has kids around the house, or is a kid at heart, this Moonlight Movie is a great choice. Thanks to donations from Valley businesses the films are free. So pack a picnic basket and spread out under the stars.
In addition to our Moonlight Movies series, Steele Indian School Park hosts a wonderful summer concert series. The free concerts are held at the park’s amphitheatre and they cover every kind of music from jazz and blues to rock, Latin salsa and country. The concerts run from June 10 to Sept. 9 and start at 8 p.m. You can get more information about the concerts by calling 602-495-0739.
I also wanted to take this opportunity to provide an update on the dog park at Steele Indian School Park. Our Parks and Recreation Department has been working to prepare the site of the new off-leash area for your dogs. You’ll soon see fences erected and the all-important mutt mitts added. Look for a grand opening in the next few months.
As you can see, it’s busy in the central city. I’m glad to say that even in the heat, there’s a lot going on in Phoenix. Though the thermometer is flying into triple digits, we’ll have plenty to do. Just keep cool and enjoy the dog days of summer.
