Letter to the Editor:
As Phoenix City Councilmembers, we recognize the importance of protecting natural resources and open spaces, particularly in light of the rapid growth we have seen in Arizona. For that reason, we strongly endorse Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt’s proposed Sonoran Desert National Monument.
The City of Phoenix is committed to maintaining important open space and wildlife corridors and creating recreational opportunities for our residents. Located just southwest of Phoenix, the Sonoran Desert National Monument would protect critical habitat and archaeological sites. Equally important, it will ensure that one of the wide open spaces that draws people to Arizona will remain that way forever. This designation protects these lands from many threats yet permits environmentally friendly recreation to the people who live in the Valley. It is more important now than ever to find ways to protect landscapes of habitat before they are lost forever. By designating this area as a National Monument, one of the most pristine Sonoran Desert landscapes in Maricopa County will remain intact.
