Summer Safety Tips to Protect Your Family
Summer can be an enjoyable time in the Ahwatukee Foothills, with the beautiful mountains and desert and wonderful quality of life. But it's also a time to take important precautions to help your family stay safe.
Pool Safety: Our Fire Department has outlined the ABCs of water safety:
- Adult Supervision: Make sure you know where your kids are at all times around water.
- Barriers: Block access to your pool with a fence or pool cover. Make sure your inside doors have the high locks that kids can't reach - keep them locked.
- Classes: Enroll your child in swimming classes and enroll yourself in CPR classes.
Vacation Safety: Our Police Department has tips on what to do when you're going on vacation:
- Tell neighbors you're leaving town and let them know how to contact you.
- Halt deliveries of the mail and newspapers.
- Make sure someone can trim your lawn and shrubs, so it's not obvious that you've been away for awhile.
- Get timers for outdoor lights and even some indoor timers for lights or a TV.
- Don't leave an answering machine message saying you're away.
Fire Safety: As we've seen, wildfires can burn not only in the high-country forest, but also in our desert and mountain preserve land. Here are tips from the Phoenix Fire Department:
- Clear brush, weeds and piles of wood and yard waste at least 30 feet away from your home.
- Remove low branches and cut branches that hang over your home.
- Keep plants appropriately watered so they're not dried out.
- Don't light fires and dispose of all matches and cigarettes safely.
Visit phoenix.gov/police and click on "Crime Prevention" and then "Vacation Check List" for more vacation safety tips and visit phoenix.gov/fire for additional information on water and brushfire safety.
Have a fun, safe summer whether you're staying home or heading to the mountains or beach.
