Ahwatukee Foothills News

July 2006

New Fire Chief is a Familiar Face

Strong leadership in Phoenix's top public safety positions is crucial for the well-being of our residents. You likely are familiar with Bob Khan, who is taking over next month as the new Phoenix fire chief and will continue with the leadership that has made Phoenix Fire an international leader. Long-time Chief Alan Brunacini is stepping down and our thanks go to him for his decades of incredible service to the city.

Chief Khan has served as the top spokesperson for the Fire Department for many years and assistant chief since 2001.

"It's a humbling experience to follow Chief Brunacini," Chief Khan said. "He has set the standard in the fire industry."

Chief Khan is busy planning the future of the Fire Department in Ahwatukee Foothills and the whole city. The Foothills will be seeing a new fire station, funded by the 2006 Bond Program, in addition to the three present stations. The new station will likely be located in the western part of the Foothills.

"I look forward to a long, productive relationship with Ahwatukee Foothills community leaders," Khan said. "They are dedicated not only to public safety, but also the community overall. It's a terrific group of neighborhood leaders who care about their community and their city."

As the "face" of the fire department, Chief Khan has devoted himself to educating parents about protecting their kids around water and bringing attention to CPR and other training and equipment that can save lives. He also personifies the part of the Fire Department's mission statement that says, "Be nice."

He says that pool and water safety and brush fire safety are key topics for Foothills residents. For safety tips on those and many other issues, visit phoenix.gov/fire.

As a member of the City Council Public Safety Subcommittee, I congratulate Chief Bob Khan on his appointment to the top spot in our Fire Department. His quality leadership will continue to make the Foothills and the whole city proud.
