Kyrene's New Leadership Moving District Forward
Quality schools are a key factor in making the Ahwatukee Foothills a great place to live and raise a family. The Kyrene Elementary School District's strong programs mean that our children can attend excellent neighborhood schools during the crucial early years.
As the councilman for Ahwatukee Foothills and chair of the City Council Education Subcommittee, I have had the pleasure of meeting with Kyrene's new superintendent, Dr. David Schauer, since he took over in July. Dr. Schauer has spent 11 years with the district as a principal and administrator, working closely with the former superintendent, Dr. Maria Menconi, through her retirement this past summer.
Dr. Schauer's experience, strong ties with the community and close relationships with Kyrene staff provide an excellent base to build on the district's already stellar reputation.
He's spent his first 100 days holding meetings with parents, community groups and staff.
"One of my first goals was to reach out to the community and bring people together," said Dr. Schauer.
The district is revising its strategic plan, with the idea of creating additional unique programs to satisfy students' needs as one cornerstone. He cites the Montessori program at Kyrene del Norte Elementary as an example of the choices the district is working to provide.
Technology is another hallmark.
The "Kyrene Teaches with Technology Project" (KTTP) recently won an award from the National School Boards Association. The program allows groups of teachers to work in learning teams on laptop computers with students, using the technology as an integrated learning tool.
These are the types of programs that will create the educated workforce of the future and boost Arizona's economy.
"I want us to be the beacon of educational excellence that's pointing the way for how public education can be done," said Dr. Schauer.
Our community can help make that happen by supporting our schools in any way possible. It's the most important thing we can do to ensure the Ahwatukee Foothills remains a wonderful place to live for generations to come.
