Councilman Greg Stanton
Ahwatukee Foothills News Column

March 2007

Let’s Play Ball!

The weather is heating up and it’s time to dust off the bases. Cool spring evenings combined with longer days make many of us think of baseball. Our local sluggers – both boys and girls, young and old - are gearing up for another season.

Watching the skill, spirit, and determination of the Ahwatukee Dawgs carry them to the Little League World Series last year made all of us proud to be a part of this community. The commitment of Tom Kingery and Rich Camarillo helped fulfill the dreams of these young players to step up to home plate in a World Series. As this year’s season gears up, we’re working to ensure all of our teams, both recreational and competitive, have a place to hit the ball out of the park.

I am happy to report that for our little leaguers an extensive renovation of the ball field at Desert Foothills Park is complete. Fresh new sod has been installed and the field is now laser leveled, which means a smoother, more level playing field. At Mountain Vista Park, dugout covers are out and ready for a busy baseball season. City sports staff has been instrumental in giving the league the fields and resources they need to have a successful season.

Not only will our little leaguers be busy this season, but so will participants in the Pony League. The Pony League has participation from more than 1,000 young people in Ahwatukee Foothills. The League has been providing quality athletic opportunities for our children for more than 50 years and offers participation for not only highly skilled athletes but for those who are simply interested in the sport and having a good time.

With organizations like the Ahwatukee Little League, Pony League and other organizations, individuals of all ages can feel that sense of team spirit and accomplishment. I’m committed to working with our city staff to ensure that the fields are maintained and available for all to enjoy. I believe that sporting activities are a great way to keep our community happy and healthy, not to mention safe in a controlled environment. In addition, there is nothing better than getting the whole family together to watch a good game of baseball.
