Start Gearing up for Swim Season
April features beautiful spring weather and our Ahwatukee Foothills community spends quality time outdoors while bicycling, walking, and enjoying city parks. Kids and parents alike are sure to flock to our local community pools or take a dip in their own back yard pool to take advantage of the mildly warm weather.
This year marks our sweet 16 anniversary with Cigna HealthCare of Arizona, a committed partnership to make summers fun and safe for our children. Each year this sponsor brings us the Itty Bitty Beach Party, a free event for children ages six and under and their parents. This year’s Itty Bitty Beach Party will be from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, June 29, at the Pecos Pool at 48th Street and Pecos Road. Mark your calendars now as this party will include water safety educational activities, games, dance and swimsuit contests, refreshments and more.
Next month, Pecos Pool also will be home to a “dive-in” movie, a favorite summer event where guests can enjoy a movie directly from the pool on a Saturday evening. We’re still busy planning this event, so call my office or the city’s Aquatics Office at 602-262-6541 for more information.
Besides these annual events, our city pools offer a two-week swimming lesson program for only $6. This is a great opportunity for our children to learn how to swim while having fun. Register them today by visiting phoenix.gov/parks or by calling 602-534-SWIM (7946). Learning how to swim is one way to have a successful pool environment, but there is more that we can do to keep our loved ones safe around water. CPR classes are offered throughout the swim season for around $20, which includes certification through the American Heart Association. For more information on CPR classes, visit phoenix.gov/cert.
Here are some additional pool safety tips that will help keep our families safe while the swim season officially kicks-off:
- Always have a “designated child watcher”
- If you leave the pool area, take the children with you
- Don’t allow children to play around the pool and store all toys outside the pool area
- Keep life-saving devices near the pool, such as a pole, hook or flotation device
- Never swim alone, or while under the influence of alcohol or medications.
If you have additional questions about water safety, call the city’s Water Safety Hotline at 602-534-POOL (7665).
Let’s have a great and safe swim season!
