June 2007 Silent Sundays here to stay
Ahwatukee Foothills is a community like no other. Mountain views, beautiful sunsets, and friendly neighbors make it a great place to call home. As our region grows, we need to stay focused on preserving the tranquility of the desert amidst the booming activity of a community minutes from downtown Phoenix. In an effort to accomplish this, the city of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department has established a program called “Silent Sundays” at South Mountain Park.
Our community has been impacted by recent news stories of cyclists that have been seriously injured or killed by motorists. In March, we unveiled new “Share the Road” signs along Pecos Road in an effort to raise awareness about street safety. I am committed to continuing my work with members of our community to improve the safety of our roadways. “Silent Sundays” at South Mountain Park will provide a venue for cyclists, hikers, and horseback riders to enjoy the silence and serenity of the park without the noise and distraction of motorized vehicles.
The first “Silent Sunday” in South Mountain Park was held last October and the city received an overwhelmingly positive response. The park was closed to all motorized vehicles for the entire day. Visitors were encouraged to hike, bike, or horseback ride on the many trails in the park or participate in a variety of other events including interpretive programs and ranger-led hikes. The South Mountain Environmental Education Center served as a focal point for the day’s activities and provided visitors with information regarding the park. Visitors could find trail maps, brochures about the Sonoran Desert and learn about ranger-led discussions and presentations.
Upcoming Silent Sunday events are currently scheduled for June 24, July 22, Aug. 26, Sept. 23, Oct. 28, Nov. 18 and Dec. 23.
