Ahwatukee Foothills News
July 26, 2001
In a recent issue of Ahwatukee Foothills News, a reader expressed concern about expenditures related to the proposed student safety bridge at 26th Street and Ray Road, adjacent to Kyrene Monte Vista Elementary School.
For more than a year, I have been working closely with residents who live in the area and representatives from the Kyrene Monte Vista School to create a safe pedestrian environment for students crossing Ray Road. Parents and school officials have been appropriately vocal about the amount of traffic and excessive speeding along Ray Road and asked my office to look for ways to help keep our children safe.
As a result, the City Council recently approved $165,000 for the student safety bridge project. The funds will be used by the city's Street Transportation Department to conduct a feasibility study that will include a site topographic survey, soil investigation, traffic analysis, a report detailing construction and location options, and a public meeting. Performing this research and analyzing the results requires a substantial amount of professional and technical expertise and time. As with similar construction projects, city staff members must be certain that proposed bridge locations are safe and convenient for pedestrians.
As chairman of the City Council Family and Education Subcommittee, a top priority is school safety. An investment in our children's safety, such as this proposed bridge, is a good public investment.
Many thanks are owed to Katie Muller-Kowalski for her time and effort advocating for the safety bridge. Building this bridge hopefully will give peace of mind to parents that their children will be safer traveling to school each day.
