The Phoenix City Council has approved the budget for 2000-2001, which includes more than $15 million in service improvements.
Below are some of the budget highlights:
- Hiring an additional 56 police officers.
- Increasing library hours so that all city libraries are open until 9 p.m. on school nights.
- Increasing the number of after-school recreation sites from 101 to 133.
- Purchasing 10 radar trailers and tracking boxes to address neighborhood speeding concerns.
- Providing additional hours and resources for senior programs.
- Increasing major and collector street sweeping from every three weeks to every two weeks.
- Improving maintenance of major and collector streets, paving dirt alleys and installing additional sidewalks and gutters.
- Funding a pilot urban infill and redevelopment program, which will include purchasing vacant lots and dilapidated homes.
- Adding staff to improve the neighborhood inspection caseload cycle and response times, and to implement a landlord/tenant education and slum prevention program.
