Councilman Greg Stanton's
Arcadia News Column
September 2000
People who run red lights cause thousands of accidents, and tragically, hundreds of deaths each year. In fact, according to a recent study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, Phoenix ranked among the worst cities in the United States for red-light running.
I and my colleagues on the Phoenix City Council take public safety issues very seriously. That is why we recently approved an effort to implement a photo red light enforcement program in Phoenix, similar to the successful red-light running programs in Mesa, Scottsdale and Tempe.
By the end of the year, certain Phoenix intersections will be equipped with photo red light cameras. Once the red light cameras are installed, the city will implement an extensive public awareness campaign informing residents of the program. Current plans call for a one-month warning period, and after that time, red-light runners will receive a ticket and must pay a significant fine.
According to the Phoenix Police Department, officers wrote 9,600 citations for red-light runners in 1999, and they expect these numbers to continue to increase this year. That is why it is essential that we take action now.
Running red lights is an unacceptable, senseless and potentially deadly act. We must work together to stop the deaths and injuries that unnecessarily occur each year. Drivers must understand this message and take it seriously - RED MEANS STOP.
