Councilman Greg Stanton's
Arcadia News Column
April 2001

A major gateway to our community is the Indian School corridor. In fact, more than 21,000 cars travel on east Indian School Road each day.

However, for too long the Indian School Canal Bank from 49th Street to 60th Street has been in dire need of beautification. Improving the canal bank is one of my key priorities, and I am proud to announce that my office, area residents, city staff members and the Salt River Project are teaming together to transform the canal bank into an inviting, pedestrian-friendly environment.

A steering committee comprised of area residents is providing input and has developed the following goals for the project:
  • maintain access to the canal;
  • provide shade along the canal bank pathways;
  • maintain visibility to Camelback Mountain;
  • incorporate a desert paint color scheme; and
  • preserve the view by constructing retaining walls at a low height.

From these suggestions and many others, the office of Landscape Architect Steve Martino has created a design that includes the addition of trees and shrubs, accented by a serpentine retaining wall system. Additionally, aspects of the Arizona Falls project, designed for Indian School Road and 56th Street, will be incorporated into the canal bank project to maintain consistency.

Easy accessibility from Indian School Road to the canal for recreational purposes and public transit will be maintained throughout the length of the project. Work will continue on the project for the next year, with anticipated completion in the summer 2002.

Please join me at the next community meeting where you’ll receive updated information on the project and be able to view the proposed designs. The meeting will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 10, at the Ingleside Middle School Cafeteria, 5402 E. Osborn Road.
