Councilman Greg Stanton's
Arcadia News Column
May 2001
It is an unfortunate reality that juvenile crime is the highest from 3 to 8 p.m. during the weekdays, the time immediately after children get out of school. Providing constructive activities to keep children busy during this time is essential, therefore keeping our kids off the streets and away from trouble.
As chairman of the City Council Family and Education Subcommittee, I am pleased to report that the city offers after-school programs for our youth at more than 130 Phoenix public schools. These after-school programs include reading labs, arts and crafts activities, science clubs and sports programs.
Children who participate in after-school programs are less likely to commit or be victims of crime, become pregnant, engage in violence or abuse, or experiment with drugs. However, even more schools can be served. The city’s proposed budget for 2001-2002 includes funding for 16 additional after-school programs. We are committed to providing a program at every school that desires one.
Quality recreation, reading, cultural, and fun-to-learn after-school programs help keep our kids safe and provide them with the necessary guidance to stay in school, graduate, secure a good job and become productive citizens. By investing in our children now, we are investing in our future.
