Councilman Greg Stanton's
Arcadia News Column
July 2001

The City Council recently approved the city's budget for fiscal year 2001-2002. The budget was adopted after extensive public input, including 15 community hearings. Four budget hearings were held for District 6 residents, one of which was conducted at the Arcadia Learning Center.

At the meetings, residents received an overview of the city manager's proposed budget, provided input about the suggested service improvements and offered additional program ideas. This public input is invaluable and it helps me and the other City Council members set key priorities for the upcoming year and beyond.

As chairman of the Family and Education Subcommittee, I am particularly proud the City Council included funding in the budget for 33 new locations for after-school programs and activities. This important addition means that for the first time, every Phoenix school will have the opportunity to offer after-school activities for students.

The budget also focused on improving community safety, including adding 28 additional police officers and nine civilian support staff members to assist police officers; allocating funding to improve police recruitment efforts to fill vacant positions as quickly as possible; adding crime lab support staff to more effectively research and prosecute criminal cases; and providing funding for 13 thermal imaging cameras that help firefighters see into smoke-filled burning structures.

"The thermal imaging cameras are state-of-the-art technology that will help keep our firefighters safe and enable them to rescue members of the community who are trapped in structure fires," said Capt. Tony Caretto, from Station #12, which serves the Arcadia community.

"This additional equipment will provide a tremendous new resource to the Fire Department and help keep the community and its firefighters safe."

Also included in the budget is an increase in resources to purchase additional library materials and funding for a youth education program, arts projects and the sister cities program.
