Councilman Greg Stanton's
Arcadia News Column
August 2001

In a recent Arcadia News column, I outlined the priorities adopted by the city of Phoenix School Safety Task Force. The task force was formed to help keep our kids safe during the school day as well as on their way to and from school each day.

One of the key task force recommendations to be implemented by the city is to create a photo speed enforcement program near school zones. I am quite pleased to report that the Phoenix City Council recently approved funding to purchase photo speed enforcement vans.

Beginning in September, the photo speed enforcement vans will be parked from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. at different schools throughout the city, with the highest priority placed on elementary and middle schools located on busy, major streets in Phoenix. High schools on major streets, such as Arcadia High School, also will be a top priority. The vans will take pictures of any drivers going over the posted speed limit and tickets will be mailed to the driver’s residence.

Residents can suggest specific schools that they would like the photo speed vans to be located at by calling Lt. Wayne Lorch at 602-495-7804. Mike Cynecki in the city’s Street Transportation Department also is available to answer questions about school traffic safety by calling 602-262-7217.

As chairman of the City Council Family and Education Subcommittee, a top priority is keeping our kids safe on their way to and from school each day. The school zone speed enforcement program will help accomplish this goal.

As always, if you have questions about the School Safety Task Force or other topics you would like to discuss, feel free to call my office at 602-262-7491 or e-mail greg.stanton@phoenix.gov.
