Summer programs offer fun and educational activities
The temperature is up and most schools are on summer break. Each summer, parents must find new and different ways to keep their children safe, busy and entertained. Here are some options to consider when you hear one of your kids say, “I’m bored!”
Phoenix's municipal pools are in full swing for the summer and staying cool is a bargain again this year. Pierce and Perry municipal swimming pools are offering free admission to children ages 17 and under through the "Kool Kids" program, and coupon books and season passes offer bargains, as well. The Parks and Recreation Department also offers a variety of special summer programs and classes, including learn-to-swim lessons and safety lessons. For more information about pool activities this summer, call 602-534-SWIM (7946) or visit
http://phoenix.gov/SPORTS/pools.html on the Internet.
Also, you might want to check out the library’s "Extra! Extra! Read Your Way to the Ballpark" free reading program. In its third year, the program offers great new prizes and each child who completes this year's program receives a written invitation to a Diamondbacks game from Tony Womack and the World Series champs. "Extra! Extra! Read Your Way to the Ballpark" runs through July 27 and is open to all youths, from infants to teens. By reading 20 minutes, 50 pages or one book, participants advance on a colorful game board, earning prizes along the way. Children who are too young to read can play by having someone read to them. Call 602-262-6625 to learn more.
If you have an aspiring Arnold Palmer in the family, free youth group golf lessons are available at several city golf courses, including Papago Golf Course. The second session starts on June 24 and the third session starts July 18. Call 602-534-6065 for more information.
The Shemer Art Center, located at 5005 E. Camelback Road, has some wonderful summer activities for youth. Summer Art Encounters for children offers a multitude of art experiences for children ages 4 to 17. Two-week summer programs include papermaking, batik, sculpture, ceramics, weaving and much more. Other classes offered include painting, drawing, Art from Nature, Create a Masterpiece, Authors & Animators, cooking and more. Programs run through August 9. Call the art center at 602-262-4727 to learn more about its programs.
As your children enjoy a couple of months off from school, please, watch them carefully around water and practice pool safety.
As always, please give me a call at 602- 262-7491 or send an e-mail with your comments and concerns to greg.stanton@phoenix.gov. Have a great summer!
