Councilman Greg Stanton's
Arcadia News Column
July 2002

As your city councilman, my job is to ensure we maintain and improve the quality of life we enjoy. This includes not only protecting residential areas, but also working to ensure businesses do not become blighted, particularly along highly traveled streets. Maintaining quality businesses is just as important as having quality homes for neighborhood stability. Responsible business owners contribute to a clean, vibrant and safe community for us all to share. That's why the Phoenix City Council has created the Commercial Revitalization Pilot Program which is aimed at cleaning up blighted commercial properties.

The Commercial Revitalization Pilot Program is a joint venture between residents, businesses and government and will provide assistance to small businesses to address blighted and/or vacant commercial properties throughout Phoenix. The goal of the program is to revitalize commercial areas currently in decline. The program will provide streetscape and landscape improvements in addition to providing business owners with the tools necessary to remain esthetically pleasing. The revitalization efforts will start in two or three commercial areas, with more to follow.

Interested businesses will have plenty of assistance to become involved in the project. The city and its partners, Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) and Arizona MultiBank, will mentor participants with training, workshops, technical assistance and other expertise to ensure the selected pilot areas are successful. LISC will provide a coordinator for this effort. Arizona MultiBank will provide access to capital. Business proposals will be solicited this month, and final site selection will occur in the fall.

If you are a business owner interested in learning more about this project, please attend the July 9 Camelback East Village Planning Committee meeting for a presentation by city staff and other participating partners. The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. and will be held at the Los Olivos Senior Center located at 2802 E. Devonshire Ave.

If you have comments, concerns or suggestions you would like to discuss with me please feel free to call my office at (602) 262-7491 or email me at greg.stanton@phoenix.gov.
