Phoenix committed to improving safety for those who protect us

Each of us owes a debt of gratitude to our local law enforcement officers. It is the law enforcement officers who risk their lives every day to protect us. This is why the City of Phoenix is doing everything it can to maximize the safety of the women and men of our police force while continuing to provide the highest level of public safety services. As a member of the City Council Public Safety Subcommittee, I am fortunate to work closely with our public safety officers, and I am consistently impressed with their professionalism, commitment and community spirit.

We owe it to our officers on the front line, and their spouses and loved ones, to ensure their equipment is as safe as possible. Appropriately, when it was discovered that there may be a problem with the Crown Victoria police cars, the Public Safety Subcommittee moved swiftly to ensure maximum safety. The City of Phoenix is working quickly to install bladders in the fuel tanks of all our Ford Crown Victoria police cars. Close to 700 vehicles will have the new bladders installed by Nov. 30, 2002.

The flexible fuel bladders, which have been successful with NASCAR vehicles, are intended to provide a greater level of security for officers involved in high-speed, rear-end collisions while operating the Crown Victoria vehicles. The rubberized bladder adds layers of puncture resistance because it is not attached to the metal fuel tank and, when penetrated, pushes away from and self seals around the puncture, reducing any leakage to a very small amount.

"I'm very proud of the fact that we have a City Council and Public Safety Subcommittee who are so responsive to the safety of our police officers," said Jake Jacobsen, president of the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association. He added, "the Phoenix Police Department is the first agency in the nation to do anything like this and I believe it's because of the strong relationship they have with our city government. The City Council values law enforcement and they show it."
