Arcadia High Renovations Example of Scottsdale Schools Moving Forward

Modern classrooms and school facilities are crucial for students and teachers striving to achieve academic excellence. As chair of the City Council Education Subcommittee, we work with schools throughout the city, supporting their efforts to improve.

Arcadia High School's renovation is a great example of how community support can help our children. Construction's been ongoing for about a year now, and, starting in the fall, students will begin to see the results. The new auditorium, performing arts and science buildings are scheduled to be ready for the new school year. The second phase of construction will focus on the main academic and administration buildings and will be ready about two years from now.

"We are thrilled about the creation of a new, state-of-the art Arcadia High," Scottsdale Unified School District Superintendent Dr. John Baracy said. "This facility will enhance educational opportunities for our children and enhance the value of homes in the Arcadia complex."

The $42 million for modernizing Arcadia High is part of a bond program voters passed in 2004 that is renovating a number of high schools in the district. It's just one example of great success and progress for SUSD. Academics are the priority at Scottsdale District schools, with 21 of 33 schools receiving the state's highest academic ranking – excelling. And support from families in places like Arcadia is a big reason why.

"The community has been extremely generous in supporting our schools throughout the Arcadia complex," Dr. Baracy said. "Parents have been instrumental in many of our successes, which confirms national research that the number-one predictor of student success is parental involvement."

SUSD leaders have innovated to boost enrollment, helping the district fund needed academic programs. You may remember the "Start Smart" message and walk last summer, urging students to be in school on the first day and every day of the school year. Also, through support from the community, all Scottsdale Unified School District elementary schools now have free, full-day kindergarten – a key for young minds that are working as sponges, learning to read, write, add, subtract and think. Congratulations and thanks to the hardworking administration, teachers, students and parents who help make Arcadia schools shine.

Our schools are the key to keeping a community like Arcadia thriving and the Scottsdale School District is doing all it can to meet the high expectations.
