Arcadia News Column

July 2006

New Phoenix Fire Chief is at Home in Arcadia

Strong leadership in the city's top public safety positions is crucial for the well-being of our residents. With Bob Khan taking over this summer as the new Phoenix fire chief, we will continue with the leadership that has made Phoenix Fire a national leader. Long-time Chief Alan Brunacini is stepping down and we send our thanks to him for his decades of incredible service to the city.

Chief Khan is a familiar face to many, having served as the top spokesperson for the Fire Department for many years and assistant chief since 2001.

He is even more familiar to Arcadia residents. Chief Khan and his family live in Arcadia and he even lived here as a youngster, attending Hopi Elementary for a few years.

"I love the shade trees and the quiet neighborhood," Khan said. "It's a family oriented community. Some of the people I knew growing up still live here. In a lot of ways, moving back to Arcadia was like going home for me."

Chief Khan's wife, Peggy Crowley Khan, grew up right around the corner from their present home and her parents still live there. The Khans traveled to China to adopt two daughters, who are now five and three years old.

"On any day, people can catch us walking the canal bank or down Lafayette, enjoying the neighborhood," Khan said.

Congratulations to Arcadia resident Bob Khan on his appointment to the top spot in our Fire Department. He will continue to make the whole city and his home neighborhood proud.

Chief Khan has been instrumental with the new partnership between Phoenix and Paradise Valley to enhance fire protection and emergency services for the Arcadia area. We told you about the plan last month, and now are happy to report that the Paradise Valley Town Council voted to support this new arrangement. As early as July, 2007 Phoenix firefighters will start working out of Paradise Valley's two existing fire stations.

They will respond to calls in Paradise Valley, along with helping in the Arcadia/Camelback Mountain neighborhood, including the popular Echo Canyon and Cholla Trail hiking areas.

“I can't think of a better scenario for someone who is having a bad day and needs a fire truck right away,” Khan said. “This is a great resource to benefit Arcadia and the whole surrounding area.”

Our thanks go to Mayor Ron Clarke and the Paradise Valley Town Council for welcoming the Phoenix Fire Department to their community.

We will continue working with PV and our other neighbors, sharing ideas and resources to make all of our communities better and safer.
