Arcadia Schools are Community Assets

Arcadia's great schools are a big reason why people choose to live in this wonderful community. Whether you grew up in Arcadia, moved here from another part of the Valley or relocated from out of town, the wonderful reputation of the Arcadia schools and the Scottsdale Unified School District was one of the key factors guiding your decision on where to live.

As chairman of the City Council Education Subcommittee, I'm excited to see another stellar year for Arcadia schools. The recently released state AZ LEARNS Achievement Profiles show all of the schools demonstrating top-notch performance.

Arcadia High School, Ingleside Middle School and Hopi Elementary all earned the prestigious "excelling" label. Arcadia and Hopi have achieved that distinction four years in a row and Ingleside three out of the past four. The Arcadia Neighborhood Learning Center and Tavan Elementary received the strong label of "highly performing" this year.

"The accomplishments of these great Arcadia schools are due to strong parental involvement, highly qualified teachers and staff and all of the outstanding students we have in this fine complex of neighborhood schools," said SUSD Superintendent Dr. John M. Baracy.

Community support has played a big role. Parent volunteers are welcomed at all of the schools. Parents teamed with district staff to upgrade learning technology at Hopi and similar improvements are coming to Ingleside. Tavan will be receiving new portable classroom space for kindergarten that will provide some extra elbow room, and ANLC also will be receiving new classroom space that they plan to use for music classes.

The big project, of course, is the construction at Arcadia High. The improvements will give students an even greater learning environment. In the meantime, outstanding classroom learning is going on every day.

"At Arcadia High School 'excelling' is more than a label," said Kevin Mooney, assistant principal for student services. "It is a goal and an expectation."

Strong leadership from the District and at every school, excellent teachers, involved parents and inquisitive students combine to make Arcadia schools some of the best in the state. With construction, curriculum, technology and community involvement, the schools are always striving to improve and we at the city will do all we can to help.

Just like so many of you who grew up in Arcadia and decided to move back to raise your family, great schools for future generations mean your children may decide to do the same.

Congratulations to all involved in the success of our Arcadia schools. Your achievement is truly a model that educators and communities everywhere should work to emulate.
