Start Gearing up for a Safe Swim Season
This month kids and parents alike are sure to flock to our local community pools or take a dip in their own back yard pool to take advantage of the warm weather.
This year marks our sweet 16 anniversary with Cigna HealthCare of Arizona, a committed partnership to make summers fun and safe for our children. Each year, CIGNA Summer offers children the opportunity to participate in summer programs free of charge. The following are free programs for four different age groups:
- Itty Bitty Beach Party, ages six years or younger and their parents
- Cub Club, ages seven to 10
- Discovery Guards, ages 10 to 13
- Junior Lifeguard Training, ages 13 to 15
This year’s Itty Bitty Beach Party will be from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, July 20, at the Perry Pool at 3131 E. Windsor Ave. Mark your calendars now as this party will include water safety educational activities, games, dance and swimsuit contests, refreshments and more.
The Cub Club is a fun way for children ages seven to 10 to learn basic first aid and water safety skills. Participants meet two times a week for six weeks. Sign-ups begin May 5 at all 29 pools, and the program starts Monday, June 11.
Discovery Guards is a step into more detailed water safety. Participants meet two times a week for six weeks. Activities include: an introduction to CPR, basic first aid training and an introduction to lifeguarding skills. Sign-ups begin May 5 at all 29 pools, and the program begins Monday, June 11.
Junior Lifeguard Training provides children between 13 and 15 the opportunity to develop leadership skills. First-year junior lifeguards will become certified in Community First Aid and Safety and CPR; second-year junior lifeguards will be certified water safety aides and work toward the goal of employment. Participants meet 3-4 times per week for eight weeks and receive swimsuits, T-shirts, certificates of participation and other incentives. Sign-ups begin May 5. The program starts Monday, June 11, and will be available at 16 city pools.
Besides these programs and events, our city pools offer a two-week swimming lesson program for only $6. This is a great opportunity for our children to learn how to swim while having fun. Register them today by visiting phoenix.gov/parks or by calling 602-534-SWIM (7946).
Learning how to swim is one way to have a successful pool environment, but there is more that we can do to keep our loved ones safe around water. If you have additional questions about water safety, call the city’s Water Safety Hotline at 602-534-POOL (7665).
Let’s have a great and safe pool season!
