Scottsdale Unified School District Kicks-Off School Year Successfully with START SMART Walk
The beginning of the school year is an exciting time for students, parents, teachers and administrators. As chair of the city’s Education Subcommittee and a member of several education organizations including the Governor’s P-20 Council and the Rodel Education Foundation Advisory Board, I am a proud advocate for education and look forward to this time of year.
In an effort to kick-off the school year in the Scottsdale Unified School District, I participated in the START SMART Walk at Ingleside Middle School. I commend the superintendent of Scottsdale Unified School District, Dr. John Baracy and the principal of Ingleside Middle School, Cindy Hans on this event. Teachers, administrators, staff and Governing Board members from the district distributed door hangers to remind the community that school started on Monday, Aug. 13. In addition, Scottsdale Mayor Manross, Paradise Valley Mayor Winkler, Congressman Harry Mitchell, city officials, fire and police, members of the Scottsdale Charros and Dial CEO Brad Casper also participated. Each of us wore matching white T-shirts while delivering this important message and residents we spoke with were happy to see us out this year. Thanks to everyone who participated in the START SMART Walk.
Recently I launched a new program targeted to welcome parents, students and educators back to school. The idea for a Back to School program started when my staff challenged me to visit each of the schools located in District 6. I accepted the challenge and since the beginning of August and continuing through this month, have arranged visits to all the schools in my district. The schools are located within the areas I serve, which include Arcadia, Ahwatukee Foothills, the Biltmore and North Central Phoenix.
I’m excited to have the opportunity to visit each school. Activities will include passing out bookmarks or apples to students, volunteering as a crossing guard, joining educators for a brown bag lunch, speaking to students, serving lunch and reading books to classes. I look forward to meeting our young students and welcoming teachers back to school.
My next event in Arcadia will be Squaw Peak Elementary at 7:45 to 8:15 a.m Tuesday, Sept. 11. On this day, I’ll be a volunteer crossing guard and will work to ensure the safe passage of our children as they head to school.
As our children are headed back to school, I wish all of the students, parents and educators a great school year.
