New Pecos Community Center a Great Place for the Foothills
Bringing important services to the community is a key for all municipalities nowadays – especially one as large as the city of Phoenix. We are proud and pleased that with the start of 2007, Ahwatukee Foothills residents will have many new services closer to home in the new Pecos Community Center.
The Community Center in Pecos Park, 48th Street and Pecos Road, is the first-of-its-kind in the whole city. It will be a much-needed gathering place and a point of pride in our community. Here are some of the services you'll be able to enjoy at the new center:
- Police substation – the new substation is three times larger than the smaller facilities our Foothills officers have been using as home base. About 50 officers will work out of the precinct and the space leaves room for future growth. Additional resources on-site mean that officers will be able to maximize the amount of time they are spending patrolling Ahwatukee Foothills neighborhoods.
- Parks and Recreation – the new center offers a wider variety of programs than available before in the Foothills. From health and fitness to arts and culture, computers to after-school activities, you'll be able to enjoy the center from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays. Visit phoenix.gov/parks and click on "Classes and Programs" to search programs at the center – you can even register on the Web.
- Senior Center – the new senior center is also a big improvement over the current location at 51st Street and Elliot Road. Residents 60 and older will have access to a noon meal on-site and home-delivered meals, recreation programs, social activities and more.
- Customer Service Center – This is a first in Phoenix. You'll be able to pay your water services bill and interact with city staff without traveling around the mountain. In the future, we're planning office hours for staff consultation, neighborhood association workshops and more. The Customer Service Center is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 9 a.m. to noon on Fridays.
A building of this kind deserves a big party and we're inviting the whole community to come out and take a peek.
The Pecos Community Center Grand Opening starts at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6. We'll have help shuttling from the parking lot for those who need it. The theme of the day is a simulated Phoenix Suns pre-game show/pep rally, and we hope that our services at the center match the Suns recent winning streak!
The official ceremony is in the new gymnasium, with youth dancers, cheer and pom-pom squads and more. We'll do the official ribbon-cutting and, of course, you'll be able to take a tour. Then we have great events planned outside in Pecos Park, including an autograph session with the Phoenix Suns Gorilla, police vehicles on display, a climbing wall and refreshments.
We've all been waiting a long time for this center and I'm excited to let you know that the building will be open on Monday, Jan. 8. We're always looking to innovate with our city government in as many ways as possible and the Pecos Community Center brings that promise closer to your homes and businesses.
Happy New Year!
