More Convenience for International Travelers at Sky Harbor
If you're flying back to Phoenix from an international destination, there's good news waiting for you at Sky Harbor International Airport .
Until last week, passengers arriving from other countries had to recheck their baggage containing security-sensitive items (such as scissors), then retrieve their luggage at baggage claim in the non-secure area of the airport.
Many times, that meant waiting up to another hour before finally retrieving their luggage.
Now thanks to the new International Pedestrian Walkway things have changed.
The walkway eliminates the need for baggage to be rechecked, and guides passengers directly to the main lobby of the airport.
Since the walkway bypasses secure portions of the airport, passengers whose final destination is Phoenix can keep their luggage with them after they exit the airplane.
The International Pedestrian Walkway guides passengers from Customs and Immigration, through a tunnel, to a 500-foot-long moving walkway parallel to Sky Harbor Boulevard .
An elevator and pedestrian bridge then leads international passengers to level three of Terminal four, where they arrive in the non-secure area of the terminal.
Since the walkway serves as a gateway to Arizona , international passengers will be treated to the state's southwestern charm from the moment they step off the plane.
Passengers will be able to enjoy desert plants native to Arizona , as well as a Sonoran desert sculpture garden as they travel along the walkway.
They'll also see a variety of Arizona and southwestern artwork that will be displayed along the walkway's path.
Currently, Sky Harbor is planning a grand opening ceremony sometime in February.
In the meantime, if you have plans for traveling abroad, remember when you return your experience at Sky Harbor will be more expedient, a courtesy of the International Pedestrian Walkway.
