Outstanding Phoenix Youth Shine in District 8

Issael Altero

Crystal Stewart

The Phoenix Youth and Education Commission recently selected the winners of the 2004 Outstanding Young Man/Young Woman of the Year awards, a scholarship program that recognizes outstanding Phoenix youth.

Issael Altero, a junior at St. Paul Preparatory Academy, was selected as the Outstanding Young Man of the Year.

Crystal Stewart, a junior at Genesis Academy, was among the 15 district finalists considered for the Outstanding Young Woman of the Year.

These two smart and focused youth are the cream of the crop. They’re determined, ambitious and driven to make positive contributions in our ever-challenging society.

Their credentials and experiences are impressive.

Issael has volunteered for many organizations, including United Methodist Outreach Ministry, St. Vincent de Paul, Back-to-School Clothing Drive Association, Andre House, and a member of the National Honor Society.

Issael moved to Phoenix from Mexico five years ago and spoke only Spanish. One of his favorite hobbies is raising money and purchasing Christmas gifts for disadvantaged children.

Issael looks forward to a career as an engineer and businessman, and wants to stay involved in his community.

Crystal is a solid role model herself. She is a charter member of the honors program at Genesis Academy and has taken college courses to accelerate her graduation from high school.

She also volunteers at Saguaro Branch Library and reads to preschool children. Crystal is a writer, poet and artist, and has submitted work to be featured in the Phoenix Public Library’s Teen ‘Zine.’

She hopes to attend the Art Institute of Phoenix and aspires to a career in the field of movie animation.

Issael and Crystal are wonderful examples of students applying their skills and talents to make a difference in the world in which they live. They’re a tribute not only to District 8, but to the whole city!
