Seniors can touch the lives of other seniors

In today's world, many of our seniors are active in sports, leisure activities, community affairs and a host of other activities that keep their minds alert and their bodies in good shape.

Seniors also can help touch the lives of other seniors by becoming a Senior Companion through the city of Phoenix Human Services Department.

A Senior Companion provides friendly, non-medical assistance for several elderly clients helping them to remain independent.

For example, a Senior Companion accompanies their clients to appointments, senior centers, community seminars and events.

It's really easy to become a Senior Companion. An individual must be 60 years or older, have limited income and be a resident of Phoenix . They also must be willing to serve 20 hours per week.

Aside from the personal rewards and satisfaction one gets from being a Senior Companion, there are other benefits, too. Limited income volunteers may qualify to receive a non-taxable stipend, meals while on duty and mileage reimbursement.

In addition, Senior Companions receive an annual physical examination and are provided supplemental accident and liability insurance coverage. Senior Companions are also eligible to receive free training and participate in various celebratory events throughout the year.

The Phoenix Senior Companion program was started more than 20 years ago, and today includes more than 90 volunteers who serve more than 550 clients.

And what does it cost to have a Senior Companion? Absolutely nothing. The program is entirely free.

So get involved by calling the Senior Companion Program at 602-256-3353 or visit phoenix.gov/CITZASST/sencomp.html.
