Vice Mayor Michael Johnson's
Arizona Informant Column

The 2005 Census is coming in the Fall
The cities of Phoenix, Chandler, Glendale and the other Maricopa County cities and towns will conduct a mid-decade Census this year.
In September, the Census Bureau will mail statistical surveys of Phoenix and Maricopa County residents to provide a more accurate count of the area’s population. The Census numbers determine how much federal and state money each community receives.
It’s very, very important to fill out the survey if it is received. By answering the Census survey, it ensures that your community receives its fair share of allocated money that helps pay for services residents count on and deserve.
It helps pay for police and fire protection, parks, libraries, senior centers, public transportation, hospitals and many other services.
A Census 2005 Complete Count Committee was appointed by the Mayor and City Council to direct a citywide awareness campaign. The committee is divided into five subcommittees: business, media, neighborhoods/schools, minority outreach and communities of faith.
I’m proud to say that The Arizona Informant is part of the media subcommittee and will be providing direction on the campaign.
The survey will be mailed to selected Phoenix and Maricopa County residents on Aug. 30. The Census Bureau will do follow-up mailings and personal visits the ensuing months if the mailed surveys aren’t returned.
It’s important and more convenient for residents to fill out the surveys once they receive them by mail, otherwise they’ll need to respond to a personal survey conducted by a Census Bureau representative who will visit you at home.
The best thing to do is promptly fill out the confidential, mailed survey and complete your part of the Census campaign.
Also if you’re looking for part time employment, the Census Bureau can help. The Census Bureau is now hiring temporary, part-time positions. These positions pay $11.50 per hour and include other benefits.
Please call the Census Bureau at 602-256-3225.
For city of Phoenix Census information, call 602-262-6888.
So when you receive your Census in the mail, please complete it and say, “Count Me In!”
