Rosa Parks Video part of Saturday downtown celebration

Things are set for the first ever “Taking It To The Streets” celebration taking place from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 13 located at the Phoenix City Hall Plaza, 200 W. Washington St.

This is an opportunity for us to recognize the wonderful efforts and accomplishments of organized neighborhood groups and Block Watches in Phoenix.

Believe it or not, we have more than 900 groups registered with the city of Phoenix.

They truly are the ears and eyes of the city. You are the city’s unsung heroes, devoting countless hours to volunteer your time and join hands with the city to help make your neighborhood better.

Sponsored by Fry's Food & Drug Stores and the Neighborhood Services

Department, this free event for families and residents will include neighborhood activities, entertainment, food and refreshments.

In addition to neighborhood workshops and a special presentation by nationally-recognized speaker Bill Strickland, we’ve lined up approximately 20 neighborhood associations and groups with informational booths to share information about their efforts to improve the quality of life in their neighborhoods.

One of the event’s components includes a special video that pays tribute to civil rights icons Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr.

Following the video, we’ll have a panel discussion examining their efforts to bring about positive change in communities across the country and how some of those efforts can still be applied in today’s world.

We’ll also recognize neighborhood groups who went over and beyond the call of duty with the “Making Phoenix A Better Place Live” awards.

The entertainment acts that have been booked also promise to be memorable, and include:

  • Obadiah Parker, a local and unique rock band incorporating elements of funk, R&B, gospel, blues and folk
  • Sundance Wranglers, a senior country western style dance demonstration troupe
  • Arizona Rhythm Connection, an energizing, interactive African drumming circle
  • Gary Smith, a western acoustic guitarist
  • Ballet Folklorico, a lively, colorful Mexican dance troupe
  • Phoenix Flames, a basketball cheerleading squad

So I hope to see many of your there as we salute the neighborhood associations that are helping to make Phoenix a great place to live!
