Tips If You're Traveling Through Sky Harbor

With the ever changing security at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, knowing what and how to pack your suitcases can get confusing. Here is a handy checklist for your convenience. If you have questions or concerns about items which are not listed, consult the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) website at tsa.gov.

And of course, it is always a good idea to check with your airline regarding their specific baggage policies.

Remember, passengers may only bring one carry-on and one personal item, such as a purse or a briefcase, past the security checkpoint. Check for international restrictions with your airline. Here are a couple of things to consider if you're traveling through Sky Harbor.

Carry-on items that are allowed:

  • Film (checked baggage screening may damage film, so carry it on the plane)
  • Prescriptions in their original containers
  • Necessary non-prescription medications. For permitted amounts, check tsa.gov
  • Baby formula and baby food - if traveling with the baby only
  • Other liquids in 3 ounce containers, in a plastic baggie
  • Laptops, cell phones, electronic games, etc.
  • Matches (safety matches only - not lighters)
  • Chapstick or lipstick (but not liquid lip glosses or gels)

Checked baggage:

  • Liquids, gels, lotions, cosmetics, perfumes, aerosols and similar items
  • Sharp items, weapons, tools, sporting goods such as baseball bats
  • Place books and shoes in different areas of your luggage. Don’t condense them all in one place, which may alarm the screening machines.

Before Arriving at Sky Harbor:

  • Call your airline to check on flight status. Although there may not be weather delays in Phoenix, there may be delays in other parts of the country that affect flights here.
  • Confirm baggage weight limits with your airline. Airlines may charge extra for a bag that exceeds their limits.
  • Call the Parking Hotline at 602-273-4545 for parking availability
  • Wear easily removable shoes as all shoes must be removed at the security checkpoint. (Look for the blue “Sky Slippers” to cover your feet during screening)
  • Inform your airline of any special needs you may have
  • Arrive at the airport two hours prior to your domestic flight and 3 hours prior to your international flight.

Keeping these things in mind will help you avoid any problems and give you a more pleasant travel experience at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
