Management Intern Recruitment
Frequently Asked Questions

Why apply?

This annual, competitive recruitment presents an exciting opportunity for city employees to:

  • Gain exposure in the city organization. Selected participants will work directly with elected officials, the executive team, department and functions heads, and other managers and supervisors.
  • Gain a unique and comprehensive view of city departments/functions and their operations.
  • Develop and refine management skills in our award-winning organization.
  • Advance your career through a network of more than 165 program alumni.
  • Gain a once-in-a lifetime professional opportunity to jump-start your management career.
What is the salary? The salary range for the 2009-10 fiscal year is $36,526 - $54,397. City employees selected for the program who are in a higher salary range will remain at their current rate of pay throughout the program. For questions, contact Personnel Employment Services 602-262-4655.
What benefits package would I receive? You would receive the Supervisory and Professional group’s benefits package throughout the program. For details, visit http://phoenix.gov/jobs/supvr.html. For questions, contact Personnel Employment Services at 262-4655.
Do I need permission from my department head to apply? No. However, if you are invited to the interview process on March 5 and 6, 2009, we suggest you inform your supervisor.
What are the normal work hours if I were selected? The year-long program presents selected participants with many exciting opportunities to learn, grow, change and improve. The days will be fast-paced and participants will definitely be challenged. However, most participants work an 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., five-day schedule. There may be occassional meetings or assignments that require participants to work outside of that core schedule, but that would not happen routinely.
What do I need to know before applying?

Your approach to applying for this recruitment should be different from than toward other city recruitments. This job announcement is different from other city announcements. Read the materials on our Web site at phoenix.gov/interns to gain a better understanding of the program and what it offers, and consider how it would help further your goals if you were selected.

Drafting your cover letter and resume will require some time, consideration and proof-reading. Follow the job announcement instructions and address all of the questions listed on the announcement. Focus on your career goals and aspirations, and address how participation in this unique program will fit with or further your goals. You may want to have a trusted friend review your materials before submitting them.

This recruitment involves a competitive process so we encourage you to put your best effort into your application materials. We typically receive more than 110 applications a year from talented individuals of all backgrounds from throughout the United States and the city organization. By February 2009, 8-12 semifinalists will be invited to an interview on March 5 and 6. The city usually selects two to three individuals a year. They will work together as a class and on individual assignments throughout the program year.

If I am selected, will I be able to return to my original position after the program concludes? No. Your department will need to have the duties of your position covered. In many cases, the department will need to fill that position. You should also consider that during the year, you would undergo many changes. Your career goals may likely change, and you may be open to new career possibilities. Your networks will expand. Your understanding of how the city is managed and operated will deepen. Different people at different levels in the city will see you in action, and they may view your skills, abilities, talents and potential in a different light. During the program, you may no longer have a desire to return to the same position, department or career path. For additional questions, contact Personnel’s Employment Services at 602-262-4655 .
What happens after the program is completed?

The city does not guarantee a promotion at the conclusion of the program. However, many successful participants in the program’s history have secured promotions after the program’s conclusion. The following highlights recent examples of city employees who were promoted upon completion of the program:

  • A civil engineer II promoted to project manager for airline affairs (pay grade 036)
  • A youth services coordinator promoted to administrative assistant II (pay grade 035)
  • A council administrative specialist promoted to management assistant I (pay grade 031)

For additional questions, contact Personnel Employment Services at 602-262-4655.
