Adam Diaz, Phoenix’s first Mexican-American city councilman, died today at age 100.
Among his many accomplishments, he served four years on the Phoenix City Council in the 1950s including one year as vice mayor.
“Adam Diaz was a champion for the Mexican-American community for more than 70 years,” said Mayor Phil Gordon. “We are proud to have the Adam Diaz Senior Center named after him as he worked tirelessly both locally and nationally on behalf of low-income seniors.”
Born in Flagstaff in 1909, he was a Phoenix resident for more than 95 years. During that time, he served for five years in the Phoenix Elementary School District No. 1 and on the board of directors of Friendly House and Chicanos Por La Causa Inc.
“Councilman Diaz dealt with much adversity during his career in public service,” said Vice Mayor Michael Nowakowski. “He faced times of increased cultural tension, much of which kept his passion and drive alive for the betterment of the community. He touched many lives and will be missed.”
